ABOUT BITUMEN

The term bitumen refers to a black or dark brown viscous substance that occurs naturally or is obtained through the distillation of crude oil during refining. Bitumen is known for its high adhesion properties and excellent water resistance. It plays a vital role in construction, road paving, and waterproofing industries. Bitumen is classified into several types:

Penetration Grade Bitumen

Such as 60/70 and 80/100

Viscosity Grade Bitumen

Such as MC (Medium Curing), RC (Rapid Curing), SC (Slow Curing)

Emulsion Bitumen

Such as CMS, CRS, CSS

Different Types of Bitumen

Bitumen 60/70 is one of the most widely used penetration grade bitumens. It is produced by air-blowing vacuum bottom residue. This grade is primarily used in asphalt pavement for moderate climate regions. Its penetration range is between 60 to 70 deci-millimeters (equivalent to 6–7 mm in a standard needle penetration test under 100g load for 5 seconds). It offers excellent adhesion, moderate viscosity, good elasticity, and high resistance to temperature variations. It is also considered a base material for producing other modified bitumen products.

Bitumen 80/100 is primarily used in colder climates. It is classified as a semi-soft penetration grade bitumen, with a penetration range of 80 to 100 deci-millimeters (8–10 mm). It is ideal for cost-effective road construction and is typically used in hot mix asphalt production. This grade is produced from the residue of atmospheric distillation towers in refineries. Like other penetration grades, it exhibits thermoplastic properties, its viscosity decreases at high temperatures and increases at low temperatures, making it suitable for durable road surfacing.

Oxidized Bitumen: Produced by blowing air through vacuum bottom at specific temperatures. Used in roofing, waterproofing, insulation, and construction material production.

Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB): Enhanced by adding polymers like SBS or APP, providing improved performance under thermal and mechanical stress.

Natural Bitumen (Gilsonite): A shiny, hard, and brittle form of bitumen mined naturally. Used in drilling fluids, inks, paints, and coatings.
